Trichy: After keeping a vigil over an Australian citizens suspicious behaviour for about 10 days, the Trichy Q Branch police on Wednesday arrested him and produced before satellite phonethe magistrate who remanded him in 14 days judicial custody. This eligibility was accorded to him by the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka as Ramachandrans forethers belonged to Rameswaram in India, said a Q branch officer.
The man has been taken into custody by the Q Branch for being in possession of a satellite phone, the usage of which is banned in the country. According to police, Ramachandran was living in a village called Theaneerpatti near Thuvakudi on the outskirts of Trichy for the past few years and he owned a rm house there. His immediate mily members are in Australia where the mily owns a departmental store.
The Q Branch officer told TOI that being in possession of a phone banned in India is itself a criMan held for possession of banned satellite phoneme, but it remains a mystery how the satellite phone made its way to the country. The officer said he had made a lot of calls to Australia and his antecedents are to be verified with the Australian police. He also said that he had to stay in India for longer duration to take treatment for some ailment.
